We asked, you responded!

DeNovo Athletes, THANK YOU to 50 of you (amazing!) for filling out the Fall 2021 Semi-Annual Survey and for helping us continue to serve you and provide you with the best experience possible.

Feedback & Responses (General)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • Strength, mobility, energy and overall fitness has improved since joining.
  • I get set back with injuries (unrelated to the gym) and progress would be better without those, but overall I continually improve.
  • So very grateful for the gym! Seriously! You guys are such a blessing.
  • I have said this before but Denovo as a business adds SO much value to its services. CrossFit is a more expensive gym membership but there is so much value added (between coaching, connecting to athletes on a personal level, checking in, etc)… you guys go above and beyond what I expect out of a business
  • It’s so nice to be pushed and coached and held accountable!

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • This team works extremely hard to provide as much value as possible. Currently, each coach we have on staff only works at DeNovo; this is extremely rare when it comes to CrossFit gyms, and DeNovo is very fortunate to have such amazing ladies to run the show.  Their goal is to give each of you the best hour of your day; they strive to do this with their passion to create an approachable space, build authentic relationships, offer a professional & fun experience and inspire everyone who chooses to join us in getting better at life together. As a business, one of our main goals is to support each coach to have purpose, financial stability, and to provide them with a job that they LOVE.  For the most part, our coaches love what they do because of YOU.  So, really we need to say thank you to each of YOU!

Feedback & Responses (Culture)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • I’ve been recommending all my previous gymmates to DeNovo and proud to say I’m a member of this gym
  • Don’t have any desire to go anywhere else
  • Some coaches/members are more approachable than others. It can also be a bit cliquey. But, that is also life!
  • I do feel the gym has a lot of cliques which at times feels awkward.
  • Seems like a select few members are consistently highlighted in social media content, which is fine/rightly deserved. But showing up should be reason enough to make it onto the pages too. Progress can be big and small which we preach in class but doesn't seem reflected on the content published. Which is a problem in of itself (not particularly of DeNovo) but we ALL (mostly) let social media influence us...good or bad. If you're never given "props" it can come across like you aren't good enough, aren't worth facetime on the coaches' camera, or aren't committed enough, despite what the reality is. It also seems those same few are more consistently engaged with on their own social media pages or personal endeavors. It also feels like some accomplishments/outside endeavors aren't celebrated or endorsed if you aren't in the "in" crowd, or if the leadership doesn't see it as worthwhile.
  • We have the best community
  • I have met a lot of great people through DeNovo
  • The attentive coaches are also attractive!
  • I come to Denovo because I desire constant self improvement, not the other way around
  • I love the Denovo culture!! It’s what keeps me coming back each week:)
  • Still getting to know people but it was so easy to transition and feel like this is my gym home for good! It’s been a few years that I’ve been looking for that and I’m excited to be settled here!

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • We do our best to ensure no cliques at DeNovo! Some measures we take include inviting all members to DeNovo events and outings, doing introductions during class to make sure that everyone's voice is heard, being very intentional to pair people up with new friends on lifting days when possible and introducing new members in class. Sometimes going to a class time that you don’t normally go to can feel a bit strange because there are unfamiliar people around you and it might be light or dark or hot or cold compared to your usual class time, but we assure you that you are welcome at any class time you choose to come to! We vow to continue to do our part in creating connections and encourage everyone to continue to branch out and even come to weekends when possible! That is the best time to get to know so many different athletes (it’s like a melting pot of all classes) and it is so fun!
  • In terms of social media, we make sure to recognize every athlete at DeNovo on their birthdays! We do our best to share life celebrations outside of the gym, as long as we are given permission to do so from that athlete.  We are coaches first, so we try not to be on our phones much during class--when we capture a moment to share, we feel inspired and excited and want to share this spur of the moment occasion!  It saddens us to hear that any athlete would think that one person is more deserving of celebrations than another as we are proud of every single one of you and we apologize that this is not clear.  When all is said and done, we encourage everyone to use the social media outlets as an inspiration vs. guide to worth… to the comment above, social media can influence in positive and negative ways! Choose positivity and please reach out if there are things we may be missing! There are a lot of you and a few of us-- we do our best, and can definitely do better, but as humans, we will miss things from time to time.
  • In terms of social outings, we appreciate all of the creative ideas! Paige is our social events coordinator and is going to create a spreadsheet with all of these on the list so we can reference them each month when we discuss upcoming events during our team meeting. We try to have at least one event each month and also love when our members spontaneously plan and host gatherings and events for all of DeNovo to enjoy. Continue to listen to class announcements, as that is where we regularly share upcoming events and gatherings.

Feedback & Responses (Training)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • I've seen notable results from those that did the running seminar.
  • I want to stay strong and the barbell club is really helping despite all my injuries
  • I think it’s so cool to be a part of a gym that has had such great success at local competitions. Maybe someday I could come and check those out
  • Seminars are always awesome. It'd be nice if they all weren't paid seminars. Not that coaches shouldn't be compensated for their time, they absolutely should be. And some of those should still be a thing, especially if it's a really specialized seminar. However it'd be nice to have some set time during actual WODs to work on skills, like gymnastics/rope climb/strength/more difficult and complex movements that don't often come up during WODS. Some of us only have time to make it to the class that's scheduled for the day/week so to work on it during the time we have set aside to show up would be nice!
  • All of these things are pretty important to me as an overall package experience. I would like more strength training within the daily workouts
  • It would be great to have more time for skill development
  • I really liked programming at another gym I visited where they demonstrated everything (all movements for each piece) briefly at the beginning of class, then had a warmup for about 10 min, went straight into a strength or skill for about 10-15 min, then the WOD the last 15-30 depending on the WOD. I really loved the flow of this and liked how I could get strength training without having to attend a separate class and/or learn a new skill (like rope climbs or things we don't normally go over in a regular class). I would love to see something like this implemented here.
  • I have so enjoyed the nutrition challenge.
  • I understand what good nutrition looks like, but I could use ideas for meal plans, etc.
  • I think nutrition is very important but I don't think the way it's presented should be a “one size fits all” endeavor (certainly not assuming that's how it is at our box, just a thought). If members choose not to go forward with nutrition coaching that the gym offers, I don't believe they should be treated differently or ostracized for that choice. Everyone has their own path and things that are important/can afford/can commit to/medical concerns and just because it may not align with current offerings doesn't mean the athlete is less committed or engaged at the gym.
  • I realize nutrition coaching is important but also realize I’m lazy about it, so it’s not a lack of trying on the coaches part
  • I may be interested in nutrition coaching at some point but my life is too crazy right now
  • Not a fan of deload weeks, really enjoyed hero wod month.
  • Deload weeks that are actually low volume/speed and still don't make you wish for death :)
  • Programming has been intentional and fun. I think it would be fun to throw in some old Open workouts so people get a taste of what that’s like.
  • I love that Denovo offers so much and it’s not only fitness!
  • I like the friendly competition
  • Progress isn’t happening. I've been in maintenance mode for a few years now, though it’s what I’m choosing.  It’s slightly annoying, I haven’t changed anything…
  • Need to be more consistent even when I don’t want to do the workouts
  • When I can make it consistently I see lots of progress in my abilities.
  • skill work at the beginning of classes before WODs
  • Committed club is an amazing accomplishment for all who get it, and a great goal to strive for. And I try very hard to make it on that list monthly. However, sometimes to the detriment of my own health. Part of that is my own mental state and the "toxic" mentality that I'm not working hard if I don't make it on that list. We also preach knowing when to recover and rest, but the fact remains if you want to make that list sometimes that's pretty tough to do, especially if our life outside DeNovo has its own physical/mental obstacles. I don't really know if there's a solution to this? Or maybe it is just me. But most of us have a competitive side and want to achieve certain goals, and this is a big one promoted across the box. Maybe CC should be 15 classes and not 20? But maybe that's not "challenging" enough? I'm not sure again what a solution is but just something to think about.
  • I just have one final piece of feedback that I'd like to give. Not sure where it fits best, so I'm just going to put it here. I know, and totally understand, that you guys are often trying to fit in a ton of things in to the short hour that we have. I can imagine how difficult that is. That said, I GREATLY miss the days from back in Miramont where we started every single class by standing in a circle (and not doing any other activities at the same time), first saying our name, and then answering the question of the day. This, to me, is one of the most important things we do during class time and I sincerely miss it. The gym has been growing exponentially and I find that I frequently don't know the names of half of the people in class. I could certainly do my part to introduce myself to these people, but I imagine that if I feel this way, others do too. While we still do the question of the day, we are often trying to complete other warm-up exercises while doing it- which takes my attention away from introductions and keeps me from really listening to other people's answers... it keeps me from really hearing them well. Additionally, we've gotten away from asking people to first say their own names and then their answers. Typically the coaches just call on people... I'm not sure why, but there's just something about someone introducing themselves that helps me learn their name better. When I don't hear/learn people's names at the beginning of class, it keeps me from cheering those people on by name during the workout. Also, for people like myself who are not on social media, it's difficult to know who is new and who isn't. Maybe this is a step too far, but I would honestly be excited to see a "who's new" board at the gym where we post the pic/name of all new people for their first couple months. Beyond that, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate everything that you guys do to make this place as amazing as it already is. Denovo is so incredibly important to us! Your support and friendship means more than we can express in words.

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • We are so glad that many of you who attended our skills seminars have seen some notable results. Time to practice high skill movements prove to be the way to getting better at that skill. Our coaches put in a great amount of thought and time to prepare and provide a worthwhile skills seminar which is why we charge for them. We will continue to look for opportunities during classes to allow for skill time to practice high skill movements.
  • With our programming, we usually have one day each week where we have a strength primer followed by a workout. We do not do this every day because this would limit the amount of time that we can coach and help you improve movements. We also have workouts that if we try to program too much into the hour, it will be more difficult for you to put forth the intensity that the workout stimulus asks for.
  • Deload week. Some love it and some do not. : ) We put our bodies through a lot each day and after a few weeks of that, our bodies crave some reduction of intensity and volume. This not only allows our bodies to physically recover but also mentally. Recovery is key to being able to get the most out of your workouts. If you are not in need of a deload, we do have ways for you to make it more intense.
  • Consistency is absolutely key! The beauty of CrossFit programming is the variety of workouts. The magic happens with your consistency of showing up even when the workout isn’t your favorite. If you attend 4-5 days each week, you will be exposed to an amazing variety that also works so well together to help you increase your fitness in many different aspects.
  • Our nutrition coaching is centered around being individualized to your personal goals. We believe in making it simple and attainable and in helping you build consistent healthy habits that work for YOU. We are a CrossFit gym that provides fitness and nutrition. We recognize that everyone has different goals in life and we want to provide a path to success. That path may include just fitness and it may include just nutrition or it may include both. We are here for whatever you need! If you haven’t checked it out yet, those of you asking for help with meal ideas, head over to our Nutrition tab on our website. We have a link to a TON of recipes for every meal of the day along with snacks.
  • We LOVE intros. This has been such an important piece of class to us because it encourages relationships and getting to know everyone that you are taking class with. We want to provide the most out of each class and this is why we prioritize intros while also keeping people moving. We are making efforts to have all athletes say their own names again :)
  • Our intention behind Committed Club is to recognize consistency. We understand that life is full of complications that hinder consistency and for some, having a goal of 20 check-ins/month helps them to keep showing up. We also understand that life and travel and one offs come up. That is absolutely okay and we all have those times.

Feedback & Responses (Coaching)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • Love the coaching. I feel supported when I’m doing something wrong. Sometimes I wish I had more feedback when I’m doing it right just so that I know I’m doing it right. I know I’m not new but there are days where it’s hard and I’m just not sure.
  • It’s the coaches that make this gym the place I want to be
  • You gals are the bestest.
  • Our coaches are the best! One general comment for all coaches is music selection. Seems like the same music is played a lot, maybe try to incorporate some new playlists.
  • Love all the coaches!
  • ALL IS GREAT. Like to see Paige a bit more
  • Grateful for you three and the great coaching
  • I will say that the intensity of the workouts sometimes feels intimidating to me and there are days when I don’t feel like working out “hard” but I do always feel supported scaling so that feels welcoming and good!
  • Overall amazing coaches. Appreciate any/all feedback during workouts and tips to get better. Would maybe help to have some different energy, possibly male energy in addition for some balance. NOTHING AGAINST WOMEN LEADING US AT ALL. And obviously can't do anything about that if you don't get good quality candidates!
  • The personal knowledge of the needs of each athlete impresses me
  • I am blown away by you guys and your attention to detail!
  • I love how engaged the coaches are! You all are awesome!
  • We are completely spoiled without coaches! ALL of you care deeply about ALL of us. Everyone is treated with the same care and attention. Pretty awesome!!
  • I appreciate all of the coaches and their attention to adapting the WOD to accommodate my injuries. Even though I scale every work out I still feel I’m getting a challenging work out and excellent coaching
  • I value the expertise and attentiveness of the coaches! Each is always making sure we are doing the moves safely and correctly. And always with enough push to improve or work hard.
  • I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t trust the coaches. I know that they will keep me safe and if needed they will push me, even if it’s beyond my comfort zone. They always know better than I do of what I can do, since I live in my “You can’t do that” space!
  • I really appreciate the professionalism and engagement of the coaches
  • I’m challenged during the cardio classes and I really appreciate the coaching to scale the WOD so you finish rather than going heavier or RX when you know that’s too much for you and you won’t finish the rounds.

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • We have an amazing team of dedicated coaches who are deeply invested in YOU! Thank you for all of your kind feedback. We are fortunate to have a team of coaches that are passionate about helping others realize their potential.  We work very hard to improve our craft through peer reviews, continuing education and feedback to each other nearly daily. We are in the market for adding another coach. When the timing is right, we will know when that 4th coach walks in our doors!
  • Ah music choice. This is one of the hardest parts of our job! We are looking into solutions that can provide additional variety.

  • I appreciate the cleanliness and organization!
  • Your cleaning schedule is top notch! I bet you have the cleanest/safest gym in FoCo
  • To me, it’s more about the coaches than the equipment, good coaches can program a challenging workout with or without state of the art equipment
  • I feel like the facility and equipment is sufficient
  • The expanded space is a big step
  • Thank you for a wonderful environment
  • Overall I’m super happy with everything and I usually feel very pleased with my workouts, even when I have to modify the weight or machine I use, and even when the class is full.
  • I'd rather not have wheel pay. I don't like paying an extra fee even if it's for charity. I like to give to different causes on my own terms

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • We are very intentional with our “Daily Cleaning Responsibilities” and equipment maintenance schedules and do our very best to keep the gym as clean as possible while dealing with sand and dust being in an industrial park area.  Thank you for the kind words!
  • We chose WheelPay to give back to our community and provide a better experience! Check out more here.
  • We are super excited that we were able to invest in expanding our space in June and are very grateful for your understanding that we are doing the best with what we've got right now (while continually looking to the future and how we can best serve you). We would absolutely LOVE to have more space...however the only real option is to expand horizontally, and the unit next door is occupied. We have had discussions with our landlord, however, and he is aware that we are interested in this option when we are in a financial situation to do so!
  • We would love to add ALL of the equipment that everyone requested, and this is sort of a double-edged sword. Especially with large equipment like rigs, GHD’s, cardio machines, comes less space.  So we will continue to work towards adding what we can and maintaining as much space to be able to exercise in as well.
  • As far as showers go, this is on our mind, and unfortunately space is an issue.  Our landlord is also not very keen on this as a long-term investment in the property.  For now, we have complimentary Klean Freak body wipes up front! They smell amazing and do a great job of a quick pseudo shower :)

Feedback & Responses (Schedule)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • Thanks for all you do! I know scheduling is a nightmare.
  • Thanks for opening up noon classes on holidays!
  • Love the morning classes so much
  • Current schedule works perfectly for me. Please don’t change it! :)
  • The new Saturday gap kinda sucks ballz. I’m sure there is a reason for it that I’m not aware of. But if you come to BB and the WOD it kills a solid 3 1/2 hours.
  • I don’t make myself do mobility enough-mobility workshops for specific lifts/skills would be great!
  • A quick thought on the 5am sign ups--I understand you're trying to create a long term solution. It seems the 3am sign up punishes those who are consistent rather than those who are the issue late canceling. I've had maybe one no show in the last 9 months. I'm consistent. But I don't want to wake up earlier than I need to to sign up for 5 am. I'm a "wake up at the last possible second to go to 5am" person. I also don't keep my phone on my nightstand. I'm wondering if there's a way to do a late cancel fee charge or talk to those who are consistently late cancels vs having the 3 am sign up.

Feedback & Responses (CrossFit Kids)

Some feedback from our athletes

  • CrossFit for those kids in middle school or early high school 10-14 yo. A Less intimidating of a setting for them to learn
  • We love CrossFit kids! Thanks for getting certified Paige! Again scheduling is challenging we couldn’t get there while school is in session until 3:45pm probably.
  • My kids are involved in other activities. I don’t think I could talk them into doing CrossFit. My family thinks I’m crazy for doing CrossFit.
  • My girls enjoyed the classes and would do them again.
  • We loved the kids' classes last summer!

Responses from our Coaches & Owners

  • We are excited to announce we are starting CrossFit Kids back up on a regular basis on Sundays, beginning the first Sunday in November. Our preschool class will be ages 3-5 from 8:45-9:05am (directly following the 7:30am WOD), and our elementary class will be ages 6+ from 9:05-9:45am. I’m excited to be regularly offering this each weekend, as there was an overwhelming amount of requests for a weekend class due to varying school schedules, fall sports, and more.
