Managing holiday stress

As we near the end of another year, it’s a good time to acknowledge that the holidays aren’t happy and xmas isn’t merry for everyone. Many find that the holidays bring as much stress as they do joy. In 2023, a survey by the American Psychological Association found that 89% of Americans reported higher stress levels during the holidays than compared to other times of the year. But there are ways to ease through the season and it’s important to realize that we have more control than we think we do.

Take care of yourself: The holidays are notorious for ruining healthy habits. Maintain healthy habits like eating well, getting enough sleep, and staying active. You can also try preparing healthy snacks and making healthier options for holiday parties.

Say no: You don't have to attend every event or take on all the extra tasks.

Plan time for yourself: Schedule time to do something you enjoy, like reading, going for a walk or a hike, calling a friend, or CrossFit😄.

Accept imperfection: Before you start preparing, acknowledge that things may not go exactly as planned. It’s OK if it’s not perfect. Imperfection is healthy and normal

Don't compare: Much like CrossFit, your holiday is unique to you so try not to compare it to others.

Respond with kindness: You can’t control how others act during the stresses of the holiday season, but you can control how you respond.

Don’t lose sight of what really matters: When you find yourself getting frustrated by long lines at the grocery store or the hectic nature of travel around the holidays, ask yourself “where does this fit in the grand scheme of things?” and practice gratitude.

Try the 5x5 rule: In a nutshell: If whatever you’re stressing about won’t matter 5 years from now, then don’t spend more than 5 minutes worrying about it.

Hopefully, these tips can help ensure you truly enjoy your holidays when stress starts to set in. The holidays look different for everyone; reflect on what this time of year really means for you and be unapologetic about it. Whatever and however you celebrate this time of year, remember that your DeNovo family is always here for you🩵🧡
